Rhododendron (elepidote - Large Leaved)
"Big Leaf" rhododendrons. These are what most people first think of when they hear the word rhododendron. “Elepidote” literally means “without scales,” referring to a characteristic of the familiar large leaf rhododendrons. Foliage of this class of rhododendrons, although generally larger in size, can vary from about an inch long as in the species R. proteoides to as much as three feet long in the species R. sinogrande. Some have incredible fuzzy indumentum on the new growth and under the leaves, as on R. yakushimanum. The flowers can be almost any color. This group includes a very large number of hybrids. (C) Peter has an upright spreading habit, flowers are white with reddish flecks on the upper lobe. Has exceptionally dark green leaves. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Phipps Yellow'
(C) It is an ungainly open grower with a loose truss which needs shade, and its leaves are lighter green. When it blooms you forget all about the faults. In my opinion, it is the best moderately hardy yellow. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Phyllis Korn'
(C8) Suprisingly hardy, this tall growing, upright plant has exceptionaly large, heavy textured flowers that are a soft, light yellow with a red accent in the throat. The leaves are also large, glossy, veined and distinctive. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Pin Oak'
(C) The flowers are dome shaped white with a hint of yellow in the throat. Being half yakushimanum means that the rangy plant habit of Catalode has been compacted to be a low spreading plant with large dark green foliage. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Pink Parasol'
(C8) Its mid-May flowers in tight rounded trusses, emerge pinker than 'Mist Maiden,' and age to apple blossom pink and white. It has soft, bluish green foliage with heavy tan indumentum. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Pride's Early Red'
(C8) Its compactness and redder flowers on a tough Zone 5 plant are its differentiating qualities. Dark forest green leaves set off the red flowers. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Princess Elizabeth'
(C8) Flowers are deep crimson, paler at the base, but a true red with no blue in the color. The blooms are held in tall, conical trusses. The foliage is a handsome dark matte green. The plant is an upright grower, maturing taller than wide. more info

(C8) This outstanding variety has trusses with a white flare on the upper lobe. Leaves are deep green. The habit is vase-shaped. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Queen Anne's'
(C8) This double hardy plant buds very young and very heavily. The flowers are white with a slight lavender cast from lavender buds. Its growth habit is slightly taller than wide and very dense. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Rangoon'
(C8) Plant habit is excellent; twice as wide as tall. It has great dark green foliage. Flowers are dark red in eight flowered trusses. For added winter interest, the dormant buds and petioles are dark red. more info
